OTHER CONDITIONS AND ISSUES ADDRESSED AT THE WILKINS CENTER

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)

People with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) have difficulty maintaining attention, impulsive behavior, and hyperactivity or restlessness.  Like ADD, ADHD is caused by a neurobiological disorder in the brain.  It may be an inherited condition.

Because the brain does not produce enough of the chemical dopamine, people with ADHD try to stimulate themselves to produce the chemical with excess physical activity or by changing their focus frequently.  They may be restless and unable to “sit still.”  In a classroom, children may have difficulty staying in their seat or may respond to questions before the teacher has finished a sentence.  Children with ADHD may be labeled as defiant or unruly, when actually they are not. The knowledgeable professionals at the Wilkins Center have extensive experience with diagnosing and treating ADHD.  For more information, please contact us at (203) 531-1909.

Please visit our Patient Education Library for more information about Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder.
