EATING DISORDERS

Binge-Eating Disorder

Binge-eating disorder is a recently recognized eating disorder. Binge-eating involves episodes of eating an enormous amount of food in a very short period of time. Binge-eating disorder is more common in adults but affects some teenagers. Those with binge-eating disorder are usually overweight and despite their distress over this, are plagued by binge episodes. People with binge-eating disorder do not purge but often feel depressed. The associated obesity may cause health problems, especially polycystic ovarian syndrome in adolescent girls. Binge-eating disorder is the most common form of eating disorder in African American and Hispanic populations.

Treatment at the Wilkins Center focuses on the emotional components of binge-eating, overall health and nutrition, and establishing healthy eating patterns. Discover why so many people have found the Wilkins Center to be the center of their hope, health, and healing.
